Teen Driver Education with Top Driver

In Ohio, teens become eligible for Driver Education at the age of 15 years and 5 months old. Ohio's teen licensing process requires classroom/online instruction and Behind-The-Wheel training to be eligible for a road test at 16.

You can start Top Driver’s online or in-person class at the age of 15 years and 5 months. A permit (TPIC) is not required to start the theoretical phase of training.

Teens must complete a State-Approved Program that includes 24 hours of online or in-person classroom instruction. Ohio allows students up to 180 days to complete the driver education program, with a maximum of 4 hours of classroom instruction permitted per day.

You will need a permit for Behind-The-Wheel training. You must be 15 years and 6 months to apply for the Temporary Instruction Permit Card (TIPIC). You will need to complete the knowledge test, either online or at a designated location, and pass a vision screening. You'll also need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian if you're under 18.

You must complete 8 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving instructor. When classroom or online training is completed, you can schedule in-car training. Lessons start and end at the Top Driver Education Center. After receiving the TIPIC, teens must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 hours of night driving, with a licensed adult (21 years or older).

After holding the TIPIC for at least 6 months and completing the required practice hours, you can schedule a road test. You must pass a driving skills test that assesses your ability to operate a vehicle safely and effectively. When you pass the road test, you will receive a Probationary Driver's License, which comes with some restrictions (such as limitations on passengers and nighttime driving). After a year of safe driving, you can upgrade to a full, unrestricted driver’s license at age 18.

You must be at least 15 ½ years old to begin the driver education process.

You must hold your Temporary Instruction Permit (TIPIC) for at least 6 months before being eligible to take the road test.

Ohio requires 24 hours of classroom instruction for teen drivers, covering traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices.
